Research (50%)
My research interests are in quantitative dairy systems management, including optimization of cow insemination, culling and replacement strategies under herd constraints, economics of reproductive strategies, productive life, animal health economics, statistical process control, and business analysis.  I am interested in both methodological and applied aspects. The research activities are part of Multi-state Programs NC-1042 and S-1040. Students looking for graduate work in this exciting field are encouraged to inquire about openings.

Extension (40%)
My extension program is primarily based on my research interests. Activities include working with dairy producers and allied industry and communicating results from my research in the popular press. I also believe in making dairy extension efforts and information available on the internet.  Visit the Florida Dairy Extension website, which I maintain.  I also edit the Department of Animal Sciences quarterly dairy newsletter Dairy Update.

Teaching (10%)
I coordinate and co-teach ANS 3251 "Biology and management of dairy cattle" and ANS 3250L "Dairy Cattle Practicum" in the Spring semester.  The courses are intended as first dairy science courses for undergraduate students who want a basic understanding of the biology of dairy cattle and how that understanding of biology is used in day to day management decisions.
