Exams and Grading

ANS 6704: Endocrinology

Grading:

Grades will be determined as follows:

             Item                                 Point Value

Exam I                                  100

Exam II                                 100

Exam III                                100

Lab performance                   200

Final Exam (optional) (up to 50 bonus points)

Total                                     500

Exams:  Each exam will cover the preceding course material.  Exams will be comprised of true/false, fill in the blank, short answer, and essay questions.  Exam 1 will consist of approximately 20% essay questions whereas exams 2 and 3 will consist of approximately 50% essay questions.

Final exam:  This exam is optional and will be scheduled at the time assigned by UF.  This exam will consist of questions used on previous exams, laboratory discussions, independent learning assignments, and new questions.

Laboratory Sections:  Each week students will meet for a laboratory or exam (2 periods in duration).  This time will be devoted to discussing experimental techniques used to study endocrinology, critiquing primary literature, and completing independent learning exercises.

Discussions on experimental techniques will be lead by the course instructor and students will participate in discussions with questions and comments.

Critiques of primary literature will be lead by the students.  Each student will be required to lead a discussion on a peer-reviewed manuscript related to endocrinology.  The papers will be identified by the instructor and provided to all students one week before they are discussed.  The students identified to lead discussion will provide an overview of the manuscript to a group of students with no visual aids other than the manuscript itself.  PowerPoint slides of color figures may be developed as needed.  The discussion leaders then will lead discussion of the manuscript and answer questions from their group.  Any unanswered question will be written down so that it can be addressed at the end of the session when the entire class discusses the manuscript. Grading will be based on each student’s ability to introduce the subject matter, describe methodology, and evaluate how the results were interpreted.  Students will grade each other on their performance, which will comprise 50% of the student’s grade (see evaluation form at end of syllabus).  The instructor also will grade the student’s performance (50% of grade).  A total of 50 points is possible for this assignment.

Independent learning assignment: A problem-based learning approach will be used to lead lab discussions.  The assignment will follow the following format:  Students will be given a list of questions during the preceding class period and written responses to these questions are to be handed in to the instructor (typed, double spaced) the day before the lab meeting date.  Students will discuss their responses to the questions amongst themselves and group responses will be discussed in the remaining portion of the lab.  Participation in group responses is required (ie, no make-ups will be given for being absent).  Students will be graded based on their written responses to the questions (75% of grade) and their participation in class discussions (25% of grade).  A total of 50 points is possible.

Grading lab section performance (200 points possible):

Leading discussions of primary literature = 50 points

Independent learning assignment = 50 points

Overall attendance and participation = 100 points

Lab make-up requirements:  Attendance during each laboratory session is critical for students to comprehend the subject.   However, it is understandable that conflicts may arise.  Students who are unable to attend a lab session will be given the opportunity to make-up for their absence by preparing a 5 to 10 page paper (single-spaced; 1 inch margins) detailing the manuscript being reviewed (in the case of labs where papers are discussed) or discussing a topic relevant to what was discussed in the lab (in the case of labs where papers are not discussed).  Papers are due within two weeks of the absence.  There is no make-up available for missing the independent learning lab.
