ONLINE RESOURCES FOR IMMUNOLOGY RESEARCH USING
COMPARATIVE
P. J. Hansen,
A project done in conjunction with
American Society of Reproductive Immunology
The purpose of this project is to highlight some
online resources that facilitate doing research in immunology with comparative
animal models. Conducting immunology
research with species other than mice, rats, and humans is sometimes hampered
by the limited number of reagents, techniques, and funding sources
available. This site seeks to make known
what resources are available.

American Type Culture Collection – a repository
for a variety of cell lines including hybridomas
producing antibodies against livestock antigens, for example bovine CD8
Antibodies Online - a market for over 84,000 antibodies, including many reagents that react with domestic animal species.
Antibody Cross Reactivity Resource – Maintained
by Keith Bahjat at the
Centre for Animal
Biotechnology,
Endogen – provides cytokines and related reagents for
veterinary research.
Equine Immunology Resource
Page – from the
ExactAntigen.com – a searchable database of
9,000 monoclonals including information on species crossreactivity.
European Collection of Cell Cultures – a repository of a
variety of cell lines including hybridomas producing
antibodies of veterinary interest, for example ovine CD4 and bovine CD45R
Monoclonal Antibody Center Taxonomic Key Program, Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine – A
fantastic resource that lists antibodies available from multiple sources and
lists their cross reactivity with a host of species.
Monoclonal antibodies to human leukocyte
differentiation antigens that cross-react with cattle –
self-explanatory, part of the Bovine Leucocyte
Antigens page maintained by Paul Sopp, BBSRC.
SEROTEC – A commercial source of
antibodies against cytokines, cell surface molecules, and immunoglobulins
for a cornucopia of species including amphibians, cattle, dogs, monkeys, and
others. A separate page devoted to antibodies of veterinary
importance is maintained.
Sixth Annual Workshop on
Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens – a report on crossreactivity
with bovine cells is available in Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology 78:197 (2001)
Southern Biotech – this commercial company
sell antibodies against chicken, porcine, and feline cell surface molecules as well
as to chicken immunoglobulins.

NRFL Porcine Immunology and Nutrition Database. This database identifies 2,600 candidate genes related to nutrition and immunity, provides sequence information for 1,500 of these genes, contain information on 800 real-time PCR assays for mRNA expression studies and on 190 antibody-based assays to swine proteins.
