Eligibility

Even though this competition will be held at a different time than Congress, elegibility for the events should still be reported on the County or District to State forms used to submit names for the other State level events. Horse Demonstration/Illustrated Talk entrants qualify from County to District to State (District Form A) - all District blue level demonstrations qualify for State. Horse Public Speaking and Quiz Bowl entrants qualify from the County directly to State (County Form B) - first place County Horse Public Speaking qualifies for State. The forms are on the 4-H Events website and are due by May 15 to Jordan Barney in the 4-H Events office. All of these State events are for Seniors only, just like the other Congress events (14 & over as of September, 1, 2008).

Registration

Because the Horse Events are at a different time and location from Congress, the above forms tell us just who is eligible to participate at the Horse Events, not necessarily who is planning to participate. Please preregister if your qualified youths plan to participate in these contests. Entries received will be compared to those eligible on the District to State forms. Qualifiers in Horse Public Speaking must also submit three copies of their speech to our office in Animal Sciences by June 1.

Horse Quiz Bowl

The State 4-H Horse Bowl is open to one Senior team per county without qualifying. Teams should be 4 or 5 members who are 14 or over (as of September 1, 2008). This double elimination quiz bowl contest offers horse club members the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and earn the right to represent Florida at the regional and national competition. A detailed description of this competition can be found in the 4-H publication #4H504 (revised 2001). In order to participate in the state Quiz Bowl contest, a team must submit 40 questions to the Animal Science office by June 10, 2009. Details on references used and question categories may be found on these pages. There are also links to practice questions on the 'questions catergories' page.

Horseman of the Year

Application procedures for the Horseman of the Year Scholarship are in the 4-H Awards and Recognition Handbook, section 4.21-D. The Dallas C. Osborne Horsemanship Scholarship follows the same procedures. You can also find the application form online. Please be sure to look up the Horseman of the Year section in the Awards and Recognition Handbook because there are additional requirements for this portfolio beyond the regular scholarship application. As with the other Awards Portfolios, these application are due in the 4-H Events office by 5 pm on June 1. Horseman of the Year finalists will be selected during the second week of June and then all applicants will be notified if they were selected for an interview or not. The actual starting times for the interviews will depend on the size of the Quiz Bowl contest and the "best estimate" time to arrive will be shared during the interview confirmation call.
