4-H POULTRY JUDGING EVENT

JUDGING INTERIOR EGG QUALITY BY CANDLING

Contest setup

In an actual contest:

Ø      Contestants individually candle and grade a class of white shelled eggs.

Ø      Each egg must be handled.

Ø      Any contestant that shakes an egg 'violently' in order to facilitate internal content movement may be disqualified.

Ø      The eggs to be candled are placed in a flat next to a candler.  That candler must be used for examining the eggs.  Contestants may NOT move the eggs to another candler.

Ø      The number is written on the large end of each egg.

In the computer program:

Ø      The eggs are graded based on the photo (to show air cell size) and the five second video showing candling of the egg (to detect any blood spots).
