JUDGING EXTERIOR EGG QUALITY

Shell thickness

The shell should appear thick enough to withstand reasonable handling without breaking.

Grade A eggs must have thick shells with no thin spots.

Thin shells or thin spots would place an egg in Grade B.

The weak areas can be relatively large, as with this egg

Or, they can be quite small as with this one.  Notice the small, weak area on the small end of this egg (right side of the photo).

In all cases, the shell must not be broken.
